The movement began in December 2003, when Mr. P.A. Ananda Kumar initiated a cancer awareness mission under the name West Cancer Trust. The initiative was inaugurated with the blessings of Jagadguru Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham Shankaracharya Swamigal, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to cancer awareness and public health. From 2003 to 2010, West Cancer Trust focused on creating awareness about all types of cancers, conducting educational programmes, public campaigns, and community outreach activities. Recognising the growing burden of breast cancer among women in India, the organisation adopted a focused approach in 2010 and was renamed Chennai Turns Pink. This marked the beginning of a dedicated movement towards improving women’s health and achieving the vision of a Breast Cancer Free India by 2030.
India Turns Pink leads a wide range of initiatives focused on breast cancer awareness, early detection, and women’s wellness across India. Its major programmes include nationwide breast cancer awareness campaigns, free breast cancer screening programmes, women’s wellness education initiatives, college and university awareness programmes, corporate and workplace wellness campaigns, and community outreach programmes across rural and urban areas. The organisation also works closely with government institutions and CSR partners to extend the reach of its programmes. Its flagship initiatives include breast cancer awareness campaigns at airports across India and Pinktober, a national awareness movement conducted every October to encourage women to prioritise breast health, awareness, and early detection.
For more than two decades, India Turns Pink has remained committed to one purpose—saving women’s lives through awareness and early detection. Every awareness programme, every screening camp, every Pinktober event, and every community outreach activity brings us one step closer to our national goal.
In March 2026, India Turns Pink established a strategic international collaboration with PinkRibbon International in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This partnership strengthens our global commitment to advancing breast cancer awareness, promoting early detection, sharing international best practices, and expanding collaborative initiatives to save lives across India.
Successfully implemented the IOCL CSR Breast Cancer Screening Program for 20,000 women from the fisher community, resulting in the early detection and timely intervention of more than 2,500 women, significantly improving their chances of successful treatment and reinforcing our commitment to saving lives through early detection.
India Turns Pink is currently implementing a nationwide CSR initiative with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to provide free breast cancer screening and awareness for rural women across India. The project targets 60,000 women, with approximately 85% of the screenings already completed, bringing life-saving early detection services to underserved communities nationwide.
As the movement gained momentum, the model was successfully replicated across several cities, giving rise to initiatives such as Madurai Turns Pink, Coimbatore Turns Pink, Trichy Turns Pink, Thoothukudi Turns Pink, and many other city-based campaigns. What began as a regional movement in Tamil Nadu soon expanded beyond the state, inspiring major initiatives across India, including Delhi Turns Pink, Visakhapatnam Turns Pink, Kolkata Turns Pink, Mumbai Turns Pink, Hyderabad Turns Pink, Bengaluru Turns Pink, and several other regional campaigns.
In 2016, these growing regional movements were brought together under a single national identity—India Turns Pink—uniting every initiative under one umbrella with a shared mission: “Beat Breast Cancer Before 2030.” Since then, India Turns Pink has continued to strengthen and expand its presence across the country through large-scale breast cancer awareness campaigns, screening programmes, educational initiatives, community outreach, and public health collaborations, working towards early detection, greater awareness, and saving the lives of women across India.
Over the years, India Turns Pink has achieved several significant milestones in its mission to build a breast cancer-aware India. The organisation successfully conducted one of Tamil Nadu’s largest Pink Bike Rallies in collaboration with TVS, generating widespread public awareness about breast cancer. It also introduced the impactful “Hit Out or Get Out” breast cancer awareness programme across women’s colleges in India, engaging young women through education and awareness.
India Turns Pink further strengthened its national presence through its collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for India Turns Pink – Pinktober, conducting extensive breast cancer awareness and women’s wellness activities throughout the 31 days of October. The organisation has also conducted 100+ Breast Cancer Awareness Exhibitions across India and created a World Record Pink Ribbon Formation, symbolising collective strength, solidarity, and unity in the fight against breast cancer.
Through sustained awareness programmes in educational institutions, workplaces, airports, public spaces, rural communities, and urban centres, India Turns Pink has reached millions of women through awareness campaigns, educational sessions, screening programmes, and public engagement initiatives. Strong collaborations with government departments, healthcare institutions, airports, educational organisations, corporates, and CSR partners have further enabled the movement to expand its reach across India and advance its mission to Beat Breast Cancer Before 2030.

WHY IT MATTERS
Early Detection Can Save lives
When detected early, breast cancer is highly treatable. Early screening, timely awareness, and access to appropriate care can make a significant difference in outcomes. Our mission is to ensure that every woman has access to the right information, timely breast cancer screening, and guidance for further care — no matter where she lives or what her circumstances are. Through our Rural and Urban Breast Cancer Screening Programme, we bring awareness and screening services closer to women in villages, towns, cities, workplaces, educational institutions, and underserved communities. In rural areas, where access to screening facilities may be limited, our outreach programmes take breast health education and screening directly into communities. We work to overcome barriers such as distance, lack of awareness, and limited access to preventive healthcare. In urban communities, we conduct screening and awareness programmes across workplaces, institutions, community centres, public spaces, and underserved neighbourhoods, encouraging women to make regular breast health screening part of their preventive healthcare. Our approach focuses on Awareness → Screening → Early Detection → Referral & Follow-up, helping women understand their breast health and guiding those who require further medical evaluation toward appropriate healthcare services. From rural villages to urban communities, our goal is simple: no woman should be left behind in the fight against breast cancer.
